A podcast studio is not just a room with microphones. You are paying for a quiet space, working equipment and usually a person who knows how to use both.
Work out what you actually need
A two person audio show needs far less than a four person video podcast. Write down the number of people in the room, whether any guests join remotely, whether you need video, and what you want to walk out with.
Questions to ask before you book
- How many microphone positions are set up, and what happens if we bring a fifth person?
- Is an engineer included in the hourly rate or charged separately?
- Do we leave with raw files, a rough edit, or a finished episode?
- Are separate tracks per microphone provided? This matters enormously for editing.
- Can remote guests be patched in, and how?
- What is the cancellation policy, and is setup time billed?
Judge the room, not the gear list
A long list of expensive microphones does not fix a reflective room. Listen to a sample recorded in that space. Look for soft surfaces, closed doors, and distance from traffic, lifts and air conditioning. Ask whether the ventilation can be switched off during a take.
Book more time than you think
Setup, levels, water, a false start and a reset between segments all take real minutes. For a first session in a new room, book at least an extra thirty minutes. Rushing the start is the most common cause of unusable audio.
Bring your own safety net
Even in a good studio, bring your script or question list on paper, a backup recorder if you have one, and a phone recording as an absolute last resort. Bring water at room temperature and avoid noisy clothing and jewellery.
After the session
Confirm before you leave how and when you receive the files, in what format, and how long the studio stores them. Download everything the same day and keep two copies. Studios are not an archive service.
Building a relationship
If a room and an engineer work for you, book recurring sessions. Regular clients get better rates, better slots and an engineer who already knows how your show sounds.
