The best studio for your song is the one whose strengths match the thing you cannot do yourself.
Three kinds of room
- Large tracking rooms, built for live bands, drums and ensembles. You are paying for acoustics and microphones you cannot replicate at home.
- Project studios, usually one good control room and a vocal booth. Ideal for vocals, overdubs and production.
- Home and mobile setups, best for writing, demos and single instrument overdubs.
If your song is programmed and only needs vocals, a large live room is money spent on air.
Match the engineer, not just the room
The engineer shapes the recording more than the building does. Ask what they record most often. Someone who tracks metal drums every week is a different hire from someone who records jazz trios. Ask to hear two recent recordings made in that exact room by that engineer.
What to confirm before paying
- The hourly or daily rate, minimum booking and whether setup is billed.
- Whether the engineer is included.
- What you leave with: raw multitracks, a rough mix, or a mix.
- Whether mixing is quoted separately and at what rate.
- File format, sample rate and how files are delivered.
- Cancellation terms and deposit conditions.
Prepare so you are not paying to rehearse
Arrive rehearsed, with fresh strings and heads, tuned instruments, finished lyrics and a clear arrangement. Bring a rough demo and reference tracks. Decide in advance who has the final word in the room, because a session with four opinions and no decision maker burns hours.
During the day
Get the basics recorded first while everyone is fresh. Keep a simple take sheet so you know what you have. Listen on more than one set of speakers before you decide a take is done.
After the session
Take the raw files with you, even if the studio is also mixing. Back them up twice. Confirm in writing who owns the recordings and what credit each person gets.
Building the relationship
When a room and an engineer work, book them again. Familiarity makes sessions faster, cheaper and better, and an engineer who knows your catalogue will suggest things a stranger never would.
