Remote interviews fail in predictable ways. Almost all of them can be prevented with a short brief and one backup.
Brief the guest before the day
Send a short message covering:
- Wired headphones or earphones, not speakers. This prevents echo.
- A small, soft room with the door closed, away from windows on a street.
- Wired internet if possible, and other devices off the network.
- Phone on airplane mode, notifications off on the computer.
- Charged laptop plugged in, and a glass of water within reach.
Keep it to five bullet points. A long technical document gets ignored.
Record locally wherever you can
The internet connection should carry the conversation, not the recording. Platforms that record each participant locally and upload afterwards produce far better results than recording the call itself. If that is not possible, ask the guest to record a voice memo on their phone placed near them as a backup, and to send it afterwards.
Always run your own safety recording
Record the call itself even when local recording is working. It costs nothing and it has saved countless episodes where an upload failed.
Test properly
Record thirty seconds of real conversation, stop, and listen back on headphones before starting. Listen for echo, clipping, room reflections, keyboard noise and a hum. Fix the cause: move the microphone, close a door, change a setting.
During the interview
Mute nothing. Muting cuts reactions and makes the conversation stilted. Instead, ask the guest to sit still and avoid touching the desk. If a dropout happens, note the time, let them finish the thought, then ask them to repeat the affected sentence cleanly.
Common failures and their fixes
- Echo: guest is using speakers. Headphones solve it instantly.
- Robotic audio: bandwidth. Switch off video and rely on local recording.
- Distant hollow sound: guest is far from the microphone or in a bare room.
- Uneven volume: guest is moving. Ask them to keep a fixed distance.
After the recording
Collect every file before ending the call if you can, and confirm the uploads finished. Back up immediately. Thank the guest and tell them when it publishes.
